BOOK NOW

Watercolor

AND WONDER

Pack your paintbrush, that sunhat you were saving for a special occasion and your curiosity about mindful watercoloring you've been meaning to dust off.

For 5 nights, we're calling Olhão, Portugal home — a fishing town on the Algarve coast where every corner looks like a painting waiting to happen and the pace of life (and this retreat) is blissfully slow.

Here's a taste of

OUR TIME IN PORTUGAL

For 5 nights and 6 days, you'll soak up watercolor, wonder, and experience the most creative ways to unwind.

Prepare to be wildly inspired as you watercolor and wander through this colorful cubist fishing town.

Our artful and architecturally gorgeous 12-bedroom retreat villa, lauded by Conde Nast TravelerElle, and Travel + Leisure is not only in the center of town, but, as one of the world's best retreat venues, it's central to the experience.

Get ready to relax on the rooftop pool deck, melt into yoga with live piano music, and hop aboard a boat for an afternoon ride through the famed Ria Formosa.

Add in a joyful cacao ceremony, private chef prepared meals, organic local wines, and plenty of unscheduled bliss, and you’ve got the perfect backdrop for unplugging, creating, and experiencing the Art of Life.

Meditative

WATERCOLOR WORKSHOPS

Mindful watercolor artist Katie White will guide you through a daily art practice that blends breathing with brushstrokes.

Think of it as playing with paint -- not wrestling with your inner critic. You don't need any experience to enjoy these workshops.

This is the digital detox you’ve been craving, the creative pause that takes up little time, but has a big impact on your wellbeing.

It’s the kind of simple and soulful hobby you’ll want to bring home with you.

Whether you’re a seasoned watercolorist or a total beginner, this retreat is for you to remember what wonder feels like, to settle into the present moment, and to remind yourself of the simple pleasure of making something purely for the joy of the process.

artsy

TRAVEL JOURNALING

You can also travel through the paintbox of Portugal with travel art journaling where the white washed town and pastel sky practically begs for its own hue.

All of our retreats include our signature art kit and our gorgeous workbook with guidance for capturing and elevating the meaningful moments in your travels in a creative way.

No experience needed. Start wherever you are. This is an artful reminder just for you of how good (and easy) it is to play in the paintbox.

photowalks

& ART JOURNALING

Portugal is endlessly photogenic. With its tiled walls, whitewashed cubist architecture and pink skies, it practically poses for you.

Kim will teach you how to photowalk through Olhão so your smartphone becomes your second sketchbook. It’s the easiest way to tap into your curiosity on your travels (and back at home) to finally notice the art hiding in plain sight.

You can create a memorable visual diary with printed polaroids, loose sketches and scribblings of your favorite moments while turning your camera roll into the creative playground it was meant to be.

perfectionism

CAN TAKE THE WEEK OFF

We’re not here to make you feel like you’re back in art class — fumbling with charcoal or fifteen confusing camera buttons.

There’s no judgment here, and you’re not allowed to judge yourself either (perfectionists and inner critics, consider this your week off).

Let loose, rediscover your creative spark, and dig out that playful, joyful part of you that gets buried under to-do lists.

It’s creativity on your terms — zero judgment, plenty of inspiration, and (fingers crossed) your phone on do not disturb mode.

Daily Yoga

AT THE VILLA

Our days start with (optional) gentle yoga, led by a renowned local teacher, on the rooftop studio because honestly, who wouldn’t want to stretch out in this stunning space.

Experience for yourself what Conde Nast Traveler and Travel and Leisure have rated as one of the best spots to practice yoga in the world.

Not a yogi? Not a problem. If you can breathe, you can yoga. (And yes, corpse pose absolutely counts as yoga.). You also have our full permission to ease into the morning at the pace your body is begging for and sleep in like the relaxation champion you are.

yoga

+ PIANO

If you decide to skip the morning shavasana, do not miss our candlelit Yin + Piano evening.

Our yoga teacher, Sanne, will be guiding us in soothing, stretchy yoga while her husband, Davide, will lull us into total relaxation with the most uplifting live piano playing. It's an experience that somehow feels calming, emotional, and wildly beautiful all at once.

Piano and presence. Breathing and Bach.
If there’s a better way to unwind, we haven’t found it. We forgive you if you fall blissfully asleep in this beautiful experience.

Cacao Ceremony

HEART OPENING

During the retreat, we'll have a cacao ceremony (because yay chocolate!), led by a former lawyer turned reiki master (but of course!). She'll guide us in a ritual to sip, savor and soak up the heart-opening wisdom of this ancient tradition.

Its healing properties promise to tap us back into abundance and help us let go of whatever has overstayed its welcome our lives.

After we enjoy the benefits of this bean's bliss, we can absolutely move on to tasting some of Portugal’s best bean to bar chocolate — purely for cultural appreciation and research, of course (somebody's got to do it!).

Private Chef

We’ll be spoiled (in the best possible way) by Chef Ricardo Santos -- a classically trained chef with 20 years of experience, a passport full of global flavors, and a very Portuguese belief that food is how you love people.

While he perfected his technique in culinary school, he says his real education came from cooking beside his mother, watching her turn simple ingredients into the kind of dishes that made the whole house gather.

He’ll create nourishing, colorful dishes from the Algarve’s freshest ingredients.

Every plate comes seasoned with love (and a teeny tiny pinch of salt — because Ricardo insists nothing good happens without it.

Boating

THROUGH THE RIA FORMOSA

We couldn't visit a seaside fishing town that stretches right into a National Park without a beautiful afternoon of boating, now could we?

Our local captain will take us through the Ria Formosa protected lagoon, anchor us at a swim spot for a dip in the turquoise sea and explore an uninhabited island where we can wander the shoreline like the most relaxed and creative castaways in history.

This is your salt-kissed, sea breeze reminder that the art of life is, indeed, pretty amazing. See! We told you we have many creative ways to completely unwind on this retreat.

about our villa:

CASA FUZETTA

Casa Fuzetta is one of Olhão’s architectural treasures — a historic house in the center of town with serious personality and a beautifully modern soul. Parts of the property date back to the sixteenth century, and the main residence was commissioned in the late 1800s by Dr. Carlos Fuzetta, a maritime lawyer, philosopher, and philanthropist so beloved that the town installed a plaque on the façade in his honor.

After a meticulous three-year restoration by local craftsmen and its UK owners, the house now blends its heritage with thoughtful contemporary design: a heated rooftop pool and pool bar, roomy rooftop yoga decks and lounge areas, a luminous meditation room capped by its original domed stained-glass ceiling, and terraces everywhere you turn.

The bedrooms are spacious and elegant, each with its own ensuite bathroom and walk-in shower. You’ll also find two massage rooms, a living room with a fireplace, a library opening onto a central courtyard, a games room with a pool table, and a striking entry hall complete with chandeliers and a piano.

A contemporary kitchen opens to a large terrace with seating for the whole group, perfect for long, laughter-filled meals. All of your meals are taken care of, so we have lots of delicious food and camaraderie planned.

Travel and Leisure

APPROVES!

Featured in Elle, Condé Nast Traveler, House & GardenTravel + Leisure, and Abrams’ 50 Places to Practice Yoga Before You Die, Casa Fuzetta is the kind of home that makes design lovers swoon and retreat-goers immediately start plotting how to stay longer.

And with Olhão’s markets and restaurants just steps away and rooftop views that stretch to the sea (and the added bonus that the Faro airport is only 15 minutes from the front door), the only difficult part will be saying goodbye.

I definitely need this!

"Wow. You two did an amazing job making a very creative and festive retreat. We all had a wonderful time! We ate, laughed, danced, sang, wrote, drew, painted, photographed, cooked, shared and just plain LIVED. Thank you for putting together this retreat. It was such a gift!" -Pam, Art of Life retreat guest

"Thank you for one of the most magical weeks of my LIFE! Truly. I have had more inspiration and moments of joy than I have had in as long as I can remember. This is what my soul was screaming for. Here is to the next chapter of Art of Life retreats. I will be there." - Hadley

SUBJECT TO CHANGE
  • Day 1 THURSDAY:

    WELCOME DINNER

Arrive at our gorgeous villa and check in around 4:00pm, just in time for a rooftop aperitivo and a delicious dinner. Sip something bubbly, unpack, unwind, and meet your soon-to-be favorite people as the pastel sky fades into the distance.

At 7:30pm, we’ll gather for our Welcome Dinner, a delicious feast by our private chef think organic sea-to-table fare (we are in a fishing town!), local wines, garden-fresh vegetables, and plenty of laughter under the stars.

  • Day 2 FRIDAY:

    CREATIVITY & CACAO

For our first day, we want you to ease into the delicious rhythm of retreat life.

Sleep in or start with Sanne’s morning yoga from 8–9am, followed by a leisurely breakfast from 9am-10am and then our first mindful watercolor session from 10:30am to 12:30pm.

Lunch is from 1:00pm-2:00pm at the villa, then the afternoon turns into il dolce far niente—the sweetness of doing nothing—your personal permission slip to float in the pool, lounge with a book, wander the winding streets, slip into the quiet of the meditation room, or indulge in an add-on massage.

At 4pm, we are treated to a heart-opening cacao ceremony with reiki master and cacao guide Sarah. It's the perfect bridge into a warm, relaxing evening.

Aperitivo usually begins at 6:30pm, and Chef Ricardo treats us to dinner at 7:30pm. Times may shift a bit, but the spirit stays the same: creativity, connection, and ease… served daily.

  • Day 3: SATURDAY:

MERCADO MORNING & CREATIVELY CALM AFTERNOON

Start the day with yoga (8:00–9:00am) and breakfast (9:00–10:00am), then wander down to bustling and busy Mercado de Olhão. This is the Saturday market that Olhão is known for. Let your smart phone be your sketch book with fresh fish, produce and all kinds of foodie delight.

Capture the color and characters of this treasured tradition. Bring your tote bag if you want to take home handmade goods from the food vendors or artisans at the many market stalls.

  • Head back to Casa Fuzetta for a deep exhale, we'll enjoy lunch from 1:30pm-2:30pm and then have our mindful watercolor workshop from 3pm - 5:00pm. As always, aperitivo at 6:30pm with a delicious Chef Ricardo dinner at 7:30pm.

    Day 4: SUNDAY:

    PIANO + PRESENCE

Start the day with a grounding yoga session (8:00–9:00am), followed by a leisurely breakfast (8:00–10:00am).

At 10:30am, we’ll gather for more creativity workshops and mindful watercolors. Lunch is served at 1:00pm and you have the afternoon to relax and enjoy. Treat yourself to a massage or anything else that feels relaxing.

We'll have an extraordinary yin yoga + live piano from 5pm-6:30pm with Sanne, our yoga instructor, and her husband Davide, the incredible pianist. It's too early for this to be a lullaby, but we won't fault you if you are lulled into complete relaxation in this candlelit oh so soothing experience.

Dinner is at 7:30pm with Chef Ricardo.

  • Day 5 MONDAY:

    WONDER & WANDER

Lunch is from 12:30pm-1:30pm, then we'll wander down to the waterfront for an afternoon aboard our private charter on the boat, Fantastik Spirit. From 2:00pm-6:00pm, we'll enjoy a tour of the National Park, time at anchor for swimming or paddleboarding and a visit to a nearby pristine beach.

We'll have our farewell dinner from Chef Richardo at 7:30pm
  • Day 6 TUESDAY:

    SAUDADE & SWEET GOODBYES

We'll enjoy our last moments in this gorgeous house at breakfast and say goodbye to this incredible experience.

You had me at Portugal!
Saudade: (noun) the Portuguese feeling of wishing you could hold onto something beautiful just a little longer.

(That’s exactly what will happen after a retreat at Casa Fuzetta with us because you'll want this creative, spacious, joy-filled rhythm to stay with you long after you’ve packed your bags).

   about

Portugal

My affection hath an unknown bottom, like the Bay of Portugal” – William Shakespeare

Olhao

PORTUGAL

Olhão is one of those coastal towns that feels alive without trying too hard. Once a bustling hub dating back to Roman times, it remains the Algarve’s main fishing port, where boats, waterways, and seafood still shape daily life.

It’s not glossy or touristy. It may look salty and weathered on the surface, but beneath that patina is a vibrant creative community that has quietly taken root.

The old town, a maze of cubist rooftops, Moorish-influenced architecture, and restored manor houses, has become a haven for artists, designers, chefs, and makers from Portugal, France, the U.K., the U.S., Ireland, and beyond. Together, they’ve breathed new life into Olhão’s faded grandeur in a way that feels both unexpected and completely natural.

Here, a Portuguese grandmother hangs laundry beside a French-owned design shop featuring handmade goods by local artisans, and it all fits seamlessly.

Along the waterfront, the daily fish markets buzz with energy, including the iconic iron-and-glass market often attributed to Gustave Eiffel (of the Eiffel Tower). On Saturdays, the farmer’s and fish market spills outdoors with color, conversation, and ingredients bound for family-run kitchens across town.

For those who love authenticity, texture, and beauty that hasn’t been buffed out for tourists, Olhão is unforgettable.

eastern

ALGARVE

Unlike the more crowded beach destinations to the west, Olhão has held tightly to its authenticity while sitting just minutes from the coastline. The eastern Algarve -- home to Olhão and the Ria Formosa -- offers a more unhurried, interesting, and true-to-itself version of the region.

The Algarve itself is Portugal’s sun-drenched playground, known for its dramatic coastline, whitewashed towns, and over 300 days of sunshine a year. But Olhão remains its hidden gem.

And then there’s the Ria Formosa, a protected lagoon system stretching more than 30 miles. It’s a shifting landscape of wetlands, wildlife, turquoise channels, and wide-open quiet. It feels like its own world entirely… and yes, we’ll be boating through it one gorgeous afternoon.

IN YOUR SUITCASE

Olhão is dotted with a few can’t-miss boutiques and artisan shops tucked between weathered doorways, tiled facades, and colorful cubist buildings.

This is a town that takes craftsmanship seriously. You’ll stumble into local artist studios and pop-up shops filled with handmade ceramics, textiles, and thoughtfully designed Portuguese objects. There are also a few sophisticated design stores showcasing local designers and stylish artists that may have our shopping-loving retreat goers quietly plotting a living room refresh (we see you).

You’ll fall hard for Zé e Marie’s French-owned, Portuguese-designed interiors boutique, the modern, colorful pottery of Casa Cubista, and the limited-edition wraps and jewelry commissioned especially for our villa, Casa Fuzetta.

These are not souvenir stand finds. These are the kind of pieces that make you bring an extra suitcase.

And even if you don’t buy a thing, wandering Olhão’s winding streets is inspiration enough - especially if you love photowalking.

At the center of it all is Casa Fuzetta, our retreat headquarters: a majestic, historic, light-filled home in the heart of this salty, soulful, creatively charged fishing town.

(Pictured below: Casa Fuzetta custom beach wrap, Saudade photo on linen tea towel from Portuguese company Luzeditions.com or find them at Zé e Marie’s, handmade pottery from Olhao's CasaCubista.com, and the ever-dangerously lovely, French owned Zé e Marie in downtown Olhao.)

"I knew I was going to enjoy this trip, but WOW, this whole week has far exceeded my dreams and expectations. Spending time with old friends and new ones, this was truly a trip of a lifetime. Thank you for putting it all together and executing it to a tee. I am a very happy girl." -- Karen

KATIE WHITE & KIM MORAN

Katie

WHITE

Watercolor Artist, Creative Guide, Former Elementary School Child Philosophers’ Apprentice

Katie White is a fine art watercolor artist whose work has a habit of making people exhale. Before becoming a full-time artist, she spent years as an elementary school art teacher, where some of her wisest mentors were roughly five-10 years old. They reminded her daily to enjoy the process, worry less about the outcome, and celebrate a paint experiment like it’s a major life event. Those tiny humans nudged her back to her own creative instincts long after her art degree had gone dormant opening her up to this mindful process that has taken her down the path of the extraordinary artist she is today.

Katie’s artwork is carried by Pottery Barn, Serena and Lily, Ballard Designs, and the Palm Beach Artist Collective. When she’s not teaching or traveling for retreats, you can find her painting in her sunny Florida studio or showing work in galleries, boutiques and luxury interiors throughout the area. She also teaches meditative watercolor workshops online, in her home studio and to her 100,000 + Instagram community.

Her teaching style is calm-meets-play: gentle, spacious, welcoming. She creates environments where your perfectionism gets escorted out the door and your nervous system finally gets a chance to unclench.

Whether you’re a seasoned painter or someone who hasn’t picked up a brush since your own elementary school days, Katie helps you return to creativity and freshen up your practice in a way that feels grounding, enjoyable, and wonderfully pressure-free.

Through her paintings and her presence, Katie’s mission is simple: to help people notice the quiet beauty in front of them, reconnect with that creative part of themselves they thought they lost, and let art become a small daily act of self-expression and creative self-care.

Kim

MORAN

Designer, Artist, Dancing Queen, Logistics Whisperer

Kim Moran is an interior and textile designer turned marketing creative with a zest for life and an endless curiosity for beauty and connection. Friends call her the “Dancing Queen” because she is always up for a great dance party, and she somehow manages to bring warmth, laughter, and a little sparkle into every room she walks into.

A lifelong lover of art and travel, Kim finds inspiration in architecture, light, and texture, often capturing them on a photowalk or inside her own watercolor and art journaling practice. She discovered mindful watercolor a few years ago as a way to decompress from long, intensity-packed corporate workdays, and it quickly became one of her favorite creative rituals. Each year she even paints an abstract version of her word-of-the-year through her Watercolor Oasis project for friends and event clients, turning annual intention into gorgeous art.

Her design background runs deep, giving her a sharp eye for color, texture, and storytelling --elements she naturally weaves into everything she touches. But she’s not only creative, she’s incredibly organized and detail-oriented. Kim has extensive experience planning large-scale events and corporate international retreats for leaders and executives, which means you will be exceptionally well cared for with her as your co-host.

Whether she’s walking the shores of Lake Michigan where she lives or sharing a meal with new friends on our retreats, Kim has a knack for connecting with people instantly. She can’t wait to bring her warmth, passion for creativity, design, presence, and slow, artful living to this unforgettable retreat in Portugal.

You'll be surrounded by even more people who will make this experience even better...

Alongside your retreat hosts, Katie and Kim, you’ll have a whole cast of incredible humans making this week feel deeply relaxing from start to finish.

Sanne, our yoga teacher, will ease you into each day with grounding, gentle yoga practices, and her husband, Davide, will join us for one unforgettable evening of live-piano yin yoga in candlelight.

Chef Ricardo will be in the kitchen working his culinary wonders daily -- fresh, flavorful, lovingly prepared meals that may have you calculating whether you can sneak him home in your carry-on.

And Casa Fuzetta’s in-house team, handpicked by Casa Fuzetta's owner Tara Donovan (she is the former CEO of Jamie Oliver’s media empire), will make sure everything is running smoothly in the house all week long.

It’s relaxation, nourishment, and genuine hospitality — the kind that lets you finally take a real breath and settle in.

Yesss! Sign me up!

Come as you are.

LEAVE A LITTLE MORE YOU.

This is the magic of our retreats. We’re not grading brushstrokes -- we’re celebrating curiosity, joy, and the art of feeling alive.

You don’t need to be “artsy.” You don’t need to do every activity. We curate. You choose.

Come solo (many of our guests do), bring your bestie, or make new friends who’ll feel like old ones by day two. Choose a private room or let us pair you up. Have dietary requests? Our chef’s got you covered. You don't need to plan a thing! We have you well taken care of.

This isn’t just a retreat -- it’s a masterclass in the art of relaxation, mindfulness and living well.

Where do I sign up?

"The location, the people, the hosts and the food were all sensational. It is a gift for anyone who has the opportunity to be on one of your retreats.

Thank you for giving us time and space to expore, paint, take photowalks, drink wine and eat way too much food. I can't wait to do it, again, on another one of your retreats." -Katy M.

have questions?

"5 stars! Would highly recommend!

I have had so much fun, laughed so hard, and I learned so much about the world and myself. I made new friends, learned how to tap back into my creative self that's been long dormant and was welcomed with such warmth.

I can now paint in watercolor, curse in another language and know how to look for 3 good things in everyday life. And I can't wait for your next retreat." - Sue (Sue has been on 5 of our retreats and has already booked her 6th!)

creativity, connection, camaraderie

AND THE MOST RELAXING RESET...

You’ll be surrounded by everything that actually nourishes a person — creativity, good food, genuine connection, warm sunshine, and enough unhurried moments to remember what it feels like to truly relax.

Our retreats aren’t about how “artistic” you are (you already qualify), how flexible your yoga is (it's optional), or how many activities we can stack into a day. This week is about presence — wandering the old town, lingering over beautifully prepared meals, laughing with new friends, exploring color, texture and breath through watercolor, and letting your nervous system settle into a pace it’s probably been craving for years.

Come join us in Portugal. This retreat is more than a getaway — it’s a beautiful reminder that slowing down isn’t supposed to be a luxury; it’s a way back to yourself.

And who knows… by the end of the week, you might start plotting when you can do something this good for yourself again (we have ideas!).

Book now before this extraordinary 5-night/6 day retreat sells out.

I need a creative reset!

"This week was magical. Somehow even BETTER than the gorgeous website that lured me in. Thank you for all of your planning. I loved everything: the people, the art and the laughter. It reminded me of being back in college except EVEN BETTER. Best Birthday ever." -- Molly

 slowing down

 AND SAUDADE

The Portuguese have a word for that delicious, heart-tugging mix of sweetness and longing: saudadeSaudade is the untranslatable word for missing something so beautiful you're already nostalgic for it before the moment is over.

Slowing down for saudade on our retreats is that small act of rebellion against everything in life trying to speed you up.

You've been warned. You'll leave this week with a case of chronic saudade, zero regrets, and maybe even a plan to quit your life and open a pottery shop in Portugal (you never know!).

Other side effects
of coming on our Art of Life Creativity Portugal retreat: dangerous levels of relaxation, life clarity, and the audacity to prioritize joy over stress. Portugal and presence. No known cure. Book Anyway (trust us!)

co-founders

ART OF LIFE CREATIVITY RETREATS

Art of Life Creativity Retreats was co-founded by artists and entrepreneurs Lizzie Larock and Weatherly Stroh, two very old friends who believe great travel, creativity, and excellent food should all exist in the same sentence - preferably in another country.

Since 2023, we’ve curated creativity retreats for more than 200 people in places like Tuscany, Sardinia, Morocco, Croatia, Provence, and Portugal. We don’t do cookie-cutter itineraries. We do retreats with personality, teachers with heart and humor, long meals, inspiring activities, and experiences that feel unexpectedly perfect.

Our groups tend to laugh a lot, eat well, shop enthusiastically, and rediscover creative hobbies they actually want to bring home. We’re also known for surprise-and-delight moments that are best left unspoiled.

We proudly refer to it as the best travel cult (not the scary kind!). Many of our guests travel with us again and again and again. A lot are on their 3rd or 4th retreat. A few are on their seventh retreat! Once you’re in, it’s hard to go back to ordinary vacations.

Welcome to the Art of Life. We think you're going to love it here!
